Socio-political problems of Spain II (Problemas socio-políticos de España) 3305-PSPH2-1U
The aim of the lecture is to examine the socio-political landscape of contemporary Spain, with particular attention to its most pressing current issues. The selection of specific topics is therefore determined by the course of recent events. These events—especially those most prominently covered by the media—are each discussed in relation to their broader context and historical conditions.
The course is workshop-based and requires active student participation through debates, group work, and individual assignments. In discussing each topic, students are expected to draw on a wide range of sources and media formats (television, online platforms, press, etc.) as well as selected academic literature.
Sample topics:
From Gaza to Ukraine: Spain’s foreign policy
Fifty years of democratic change: Franco and Spain’s national amnesia
Fires and floods: how Spain is becoming an ecological dystopia
Football wars (and beyond): the political role of sport in Spain
Too scary not to look: horror films, the Goya Awards, and Spain’s film industry
Note: Sensitive content in class (violence, sexual violence, discrimination, trauma)

Assessment criteria
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory. Students may have up to two unexcused absences.
Components of the final grade:
The final grade consists of two elements:
• 50% – active participation in class
• 50% – final oral exam
1. Active participation in class (50%)
Participation is assessed on the basis of points earned during each class session for completing assigned tasks.
• Students can earn 0–5 points per class.
• The assessment takes into account: preparation, participation in debates, group work, individual work, and other in-class activities assigned for that week.
2. Final oral exam (50%)
The oral exam is conducted in groups of 3–5 students. Each student:
• delivers a 5-minute presentation on a selected topic (chosen from a list provided by the instructor),
• then participates in a question-and-comment session related to the presentations.
Assessment criteria for the oral exam:
• the substantive (content-related) and formal quality of the student’s own presentation,
• the quality of answers to questions and comments concerning one’s own presentation,
• active and substantive participation in the question-and-comment sessions for other students’ presentations.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
In this course, the use of artificial intelligence tools is permitted in selected elements of workshop activities, particularly as support for analysing materials, formulating research questions, verifying information, or developing initial ideas and working concepts.
AI may only be used as an auxiliary tool, and its use must be fully transparent: students are required to indicate which parts of their work were produced with the assistance of AI tools and specify how these tools were used.
The use of AI is not permitted in the preparation of the final presentation, including its written content, structure, or slides. The presentation must be entirely the student’s own work.
It is also prohibited to use AI to generate complete assignments, summaries, event descriptions, or any other content that is subject to individual assessment.
