Portugal in Comic Books and Movies 3305-PKK-ZW-11
The course aims to introduce students to the diverse socio-historical phenomena associated with Portugal and how these phenomena interrelate with the Portuguese-speaking world as a whole (transatlanticism). Their artistic visions, as embodied in selected comics and films, will be used to explore these phenomena.
Thematic Blocks:
1. The City: Douro, Faina Fluvial (City Symphony) vs. The Worst Band in the World (Contemporary City);
2. The Wind of Historical Change: A Canção de Lisboa (Portuguese Comedy) vs. The History of Lisbon (Portuguese Tragedy);
3. The Transatlantic Order of Things: The History of Lisbon (Portugal) vs. Masala, o Leopardo (Angola) vs. Angola Janga (Brazil);
4. Salazarism and Censorship: Lápis-azul vs. By the Sound of Fado vs. Salazar. Now, and at the Hour of His Death;

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will:
- know and understand: the specificity of research on the Portuguese-speaking world in comics and film studies and be able to relate it to literary studies; the historical context of the cultural processes in the Portuguese-speaking world; the influence of selected trends in Portuguese thought on the formation of cultural texts in the Portuguese-speaking world [S1_W03; S1_W07; S1_W10];
- be able to: use various sources and methods to search, analyze, evaluate, select, and utilize information to solve complex problems specific to the disciplines in which the course of study is conducted; conduct a critical analysis and interpretation of cultural texts using methods appropriate for narrative texts; recognize and define the connections between cultural texts and their historical and cultural context; independently acquire knowledge and develop skills, taking into account the need for lifelong learning [S1_U01; S1_U05; S1_U06; S1_U06];
- is ready to: critically evaluate the knowledge and sources of information; recognize the importance of knowledge, especially scientific knowledge, in independently solving cognitive and practical problems and seek expert opinions in case of difficulties in solving them [S1_K01; S1_K02];
Assessment criteria
Engagement in discussions about films watched in class and comics read for homework will be assessed on a continuous basis.
At the end of each class, students will complete a short report: "I learned today (...)" / "I need to find additional information about" (…).
A "worksheet" will be created for each film and comic for individual completion. Questions for the multiple-choice final exam will be based on the topics from the worksheets.
Two unexcused absences are permitted. If this limit is exceeded, individual arrangements for catch-up work will be made.
