Andalusian Cultural Expressions: Literature, Poetry, Flamenco, Copla, and Religious Traditions 3305-PKA-U
During the course the participants will learn about different manifestations of Andalusian culture, based on selected examples of prose, poetry, theatre, music and religious traditions and rituals. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with unique characteristics of Andalusia, including elements of its history and rich cultural identity („identidad desbordada”), through selected works of literature, film and music, as well as a to encourage their reflection on stereotypes and pop culture myths associated with this region.
The analysis of texts and audiovisual materials will take into account the local cultural, social, and historical context, as well as the conventions, cultural trends, and artistic movements that influenced the creation of individual works.
Students are expected to actively participate in the course: read assigned texts or watch recommended films and participate in the discussion.
During the course, participants can choose topics they prefer, which will be given more time.

2. Andalusia in Romantic texts and poetry.
3. Folk traditions of Andalusia: Antonio Machado and Álvarez ´Demófilo´ - ‘El Folk-Lore Andaluz’ Association
4. Andalusia in the poetry of Antonio and Manuel Machado.
5. Federico García Lorca, „Romancero gitano,” „Poema del cante jondo”, „Bodas de sangre”
6. The myth of Carmen in literature, opera, and film.
7. Flamenco: an outline of its history, research issues, myths, and styles.
8. Flamenco: characteristics of a selected style, texts.
9. Copla andaluza: selected examples in traditional and contemporary performances
10. Selected traditions associated with religious holidays: Zambomba Navideña, Semana Santa, Romería de El Rocío
11. Religious songs: campanilleros, saetas, sevillanas rocieras

1) The student knows and understands various manifestations of Andalusian culture. He/She knows the history and cultural context of their origin, as well as understands the functioning of cultural stereotypes (K_W01, K_W02, K_W04)
2) The student has basic knowledge of flamenco art and the musical genre of copla andaluza. He/She knows and understands selected specialized terminology and research method (K_W03).
3) The student knows and understands the basic terminology and methodology of researching cultural phenomena requiring an interdisciplinary approach, combining knowledge of cultural history, literary studies, and music history.
Skills:
The student can
1) present his/her own views and opinions, discuss and present prepared topics concerning various aspects of Andalusian culture (S2K_U01; S2K_U02; S2K_U03).
2) read and interpret poetry written by poets from Andalusia representing different generations and cultural trends (SK_U02).
3) Use basic terminology related to flamenco art and other cultural phenomena characteristic of this region (SK_U02).
Social competences:
1. The student is ready to critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills, and understands the need for continuous improvement and development (K_K01).
2) He/She is keen to deepen his interest in current cultural phenomena related to Andalusian culture (K_K03, K_K04).
Assessment criteria
An eclectic method combining elements of traditional teaching (presentation of basic information by the lecturer, guided discussion) with active student participation (flipped classroom, collaborative learning, group work)
The assessment is based on:
1. The attendance is compulsory: 2 unexcused absences are permitted (each subsequent unexcused absence results in a 0.5 grade reduction), participation in at least 60% of classes.
2. Activity (participation in discussions on assigned literature/films) 20%
3. Short presentation 10%
4. Final test (open questions + longer statement) 70%
