Fundamentals of Didactics (P) 3305-PDP-MD-1U
The following topics will be addressed during the course: the traditional school and its contemporary conceptual models; teaching goals and how to formulate them; the curriculum and its implementation; planning of didactic work and constructing a syllabus; teaching methods, including active learning methods and cooperative learning; school textbooks and their use in the teaching–learning process; information technologies and their application in teachers’ work; educational programmes and online resources supporting teaching and learning; lesson design and the principles of writing lesson plans; methodological and organisational innovations in teachers’ work (e.g., flipped classrooms); organising educational activities for children with special educational needs; the communication process in the classroom and its importance for effective education; the teacher’s language as a didactic tool; techniques for structuring lectures and asking questions; the assessment of students in school; principles and methods of assessment; diagnostic tools for evaluating the learning process and outcomes; the tasks of the “reflective practitioner”; evaluating school effectiveness; the concept of educational added value.

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands
1. the fundamentals of the philosophy of education and pedagogical axiology, as well as the specificity of the main educational environments and the processes occurring within them;
2. classical and contemporary theories of human development, upbringing, learning and teaching or instruction, and their practical applicability;
3. the role of the Portuguese language teacher or educator in shaping students’ attitudes and behaviours;
4. the norms, procedures and good practices applied in pedagogical work in appropriate schools at the given stage of education;
5. the issue of inclusive education and the methods of implementing the principle of inclusion;
6. the diversity of students’ educational needs and the resulting tasks of the school in adjusting the organisation of the teaching and educational process;
7. methods of designing and conducting diagnostic activities in pedagogical practice.
Skills: the graduate is able to
1. observe pedagogical situations and events, analyse them using pedagogical and psychological knowledge, and propose problem-solving solutions;
2. appropriately select, create and adapt materials and resources — including information and communication technologies — to diverse student needs, as well as choose methods of work in order to independently design and effectively carry out pedagogical, didactic, educational and caregiving activities;
3. identify students’ needs, abilities and talents, and design and conduct activities that support their holistic development, engagement and participation in the educational and upbringing process and in social life;
4. design and implement Portuguese language teaching programmes that take into account students’ diverse educational needs;
5. design and implement educational and preventive programmes for students, their parents or guardians, and teachers;
6. create educational and instructional situations that motivate students to learn and work on themselves, analyse their effectiveness, and modify actions to achieve the desired educational and teaching outcomes;
7. develop students’ creativity and their ability for independent, critical thinking.
Social competences: the graduate is ready to
1. apply universal ethical principles and norms in professional practice, guided by respect for every human being;
2. build relationships based on mutual trust among all participants in the educational and upbringing process — including students’ parents or guardians — and involve them in activities that support educational effectiveness.

Assessment criteria
Class grades are based on active participation – including, among other things, preparing presentations and discussing the readings – as well as attendance. Two unexcused absences are allowed. Each additional unexcused absence lowers the final grade by half a mark.
The instructor reserves the right to assign an additional written task to make up for course requirements. This task will be agreed upon in advance and will not go beyond the topics covered in class.
