Fundamentals of Didactics (H) 3305-PDH-MD-1U
The following topics will be addressed during the course: the traditional school and its contemporary conceptual models; teaching goals and how to formulate them; the curriculum and its implementation; planning didactic work and constructing a syllabus; teaching methods, including active learning methods and cooperative learning; school textbooks and their use in the teaching–learning process; information technologies and their application in teachers’ work; educational programmes and online resources supporting teaching and learning; lesson design and the principles of writing lesson plans; methodological and organisational innovations in teachers’ work (e.g., flipped classrooms); organising educational activities for children with special educational needs; the communication process in the classroom and its importance for effective education; the teacher’s language as a didactic tool; techniques for structuring lectures and formulating questions; the process of assessing students at school; principles and methods of assessment; diagnostic tools used by teachers to evaluate the learning process and outcomes; the tasks of the “reflective practitioner”; evaluation of school effectiveness; and the concept of educational added value.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge: the student knows and understands
C.W1 the place of didactics within pedagogy, as well as the subject and tasks of contemporary didactics, and the relationship between general didactics and subject-specific didactics;
C.W2 the classroom as an educational environment: classroom management styles, the issue of order and discipline, social processes within the class, classroom integration, creating an environment conducive to learning progress, and methods of teaching in cognitively, culturally, socially or economically diverse classrooms;
C.W3 contemporary teaching concepts and educational goals – their sources, ways of formulating them, and their types; principles of didactics, teaching methods, curriculum content, and the organisation of the teaching–learning process and students’ work;
C.W4 the lesson as a didactic unit, its structure, lesson models, the art of conducting lessons, and styles and techniques of working with students; classroom interactions; teaching aids;
C.W5 the necessity of designing educational activities adapted to students’ diverse needs and abilities, in particular their psychophysical capabilities and learning pace; the need and methods for ensuring equal educational opportunities; the importance of identifying and developing students’ predispositions and talents, and issues related to preparing students for subject competitions and olympiads; the teacher’s didactic autonomy;
C.W6 the methods and importance of assessing students’ school achievements: formative assessment in the context of teaching effectiveness, the school-based assessment system, types and methods of administering internal and external examinations; the evaluation of a teacher’s didactic effectiveness, school quality, and the concept of educational added value;
C.W7 the importance of language as a teacher’s working tool: working with students with limited proficiency in Polish or with communication disorders; communication methods for didactic purposes – the art of lecturing and asking questions; ways of increasing students’ communicative activity; practical aspects of public speaking – linguistic correctness.
Skills: the student is able to
C.U1 identify the need to adapt teaching methods to a classroom diverse in terms of cognitive, cultural, social or economic background;
C.U2 design activities that support classroom integration;
C.U3 select teaching methods appropriate to the content taught and organise students’ work;
C.U4 select a lesson model and design its structure;
C.U5 plan work with a gifted student, preparing them for participation in a subject competition or sports competition;
C.U6 assess a student’s work and present it in the form of formative assessment;
C.U8 use the Polish language correctly.
Social competences: the graduate is ready to
C.K1 creatively seek the best didactic solutions conducive to students’ progress;
C.K2 effectively correct linguistic errors and improve vocal technique.
Assessment criteria
Class grades are based on participation - preparing presentations, discussing the readings - as well as attendance. Two unexcused absences are allowed. Each additional one lowers the final grade by half a mark.
The instructor reserves the right to assign an additional written task to make up for missed work. The assignment will be agreed upon and will not go beyond the topics covered in class.
