The latest studies on history, culture and religion of Portugal II 3305-NBKP2-1U
During the course, students will become familiar with the latest research on the history and the broadly understood culture of Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries. Contemporary methodologies and the terminology characteristic of these fields of study will also be discussed. The classes will serve as a space for discussion and exchange of ideas, fostering the deepening of knowledge as well as the development of individual interests and research questions.
The course covers a wide range of topics and theoretical perspectives, which will be subjected to critical analysis and interpretation. Interdisciplinary and transnational approaches are intended to encourage students to recognize connections between cultural, social, and historical phenomena, as well as to reflect on their mutual interdependencies.
Referring to classical interpretations of history, culture, and religion, the classes will demonstrate how recent scholarship enters into dialogue with these traditions—often reformulating, deconstructing, or proposing revisions to Eurocentric epistemologies. Particular attention will be devoted to the reconstruction of historical, national, and identity narratives, as well as to the inclusion of previously marginalized perspectives, such as women’s perspectives and those of subordinated groups.
The course will address selected issues in postcolonial, decolonial, and feminist theory, as well as Indigenous and ecocritical perspectives, enabling students to develop a multifaceted understanding of the Portuguese-speaking world and its complex cultural heritage.
