Literary Research in Portuguese Studies 3305-LBP-11
An introductory subject to the leading discipline of the course - literary studies,.
The subject’s main objective is to familiarize students with the area of literary studies and make them acquire the main concepts related to poetics and literary theory in the context of Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as the basic skills necessary to carry out an independent analysis and interpretation of a literary work, including the use of an appropriate terminology in Portuguese.
Topics covered will include:
- introduction to literary studies
- definition of literature and literariness
- main literary genres
- selected stylistic devices
- narrator, presented world and reader
- literary characters, time and space in literary works
- selected aspects of forms and structures of poetic and dramatic texts

Learning outcomes
Students know and understand:
the scope, subject matter and basic directions of literary studies and their relation with other disciplines, considering their specificity within Iberian and Portuguese Studies;
the basic terminology and methodology of literary research, taking into account the specificity of the study of Portuguese-language literatures;
basic methods of carrying out an analysis of selected aspects of a literary work and applying them to the analysis of Portuguese-language literary works and using literary terminology in Portuguese;
the place of literatures of Portuguese-speaking countries in the broader context of World literature, especially the Western literary canon;
the location of Portuguese, Brazilian and African literatures of the Portuguese language within broader historical and cultural processes.

Students are able to:
read critically and with comprehension a variety of literary texts, discuss them and formulate their own views and opinions, referring to acquired aspects of literary theory and history and literary research methodology;
Independently carry out and present an analysis and interpretation of literary works of Portuguese-speaking countries, choosing appropriate methods and using terminology in Portuguese;
make substantive use in their own analysis of theoretical approaches and views of other authors, selecting them appropriately in order to build up arguments and formulate conclusions;
use basic theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts specific to Portuguese studies,
recognize different types of literary texts and situate them in a broader historical and cultural context of the world and the Portuguese-speaking area, and analyze and interpret them in order to read their meaning and impact in historical and cultural processes.

take responsibility for the preservation and dissemination of the diverse cultural heritage of Portuguese-speaking countries;

Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment during the semester based in:
1. Attendance and active participation in class (max. two unjustified absences),
2. Tests in the course of the semester,
3. A final project involving the analysis of a selected work from the Portuguese-speaking area.
Detailed criteria will be presented to the students during the first class.
