The course program includes a systematic and chronological overview of the main trends, themes, and authors of Latin American literature from the period of the conquest to the 19th century. Key works and genres from specific literary periods and from different regions/countries will be analyzed in order to show both the features common to literary production across the continent and the distinctive characteristics found in the emerging literatures of newly independent nations. Reflection on the texts will take place within a broad historical, political, social, and cultural context, so that students gain an understanding not only of the dominant literary tendencies of particular periods, but also of the external realities that shaped them.

El programa del curso incluye una revisión sistemática y cronológica de las tendencias, motivos y autores más importantes de la literatura latinoamericana desde el período de la conquista hasta el siglo XIX. Se analizarán obras y géneros clave de épocas literarias particulares y de diferentes regiones / países para mostrar las características comunes a la creatividad de todo el continente y las características distintivas en la literatura de los países independentes emergentes. La reflexión sobre los textos se llevará a cabo en un amplio contexto histórico, político, social y cultural, de modo que los estudiantes obtengan orientación no solo en las tendencias dominantes en épocas determinadas de la literatura, sino también en las realidades externas que las condicionan.

the basic methods for analyzing early Latin American and 19th-century Spanish-language literary works (K_W02);
the basic terminology and main research approaches in the field of Latin American literature, including early literature (K_W03);
in a structured manner, the history of Latin American literature from the Renaissance to Romanticism (the main tendencies and movements of each period, key authors, and their works) (K_W04);

Skills: the student is able to

Assessment criteria

To pass the course, the following conditions must be met:
regular attendance (a maximum of two unexcused absences is allowed);
regular reading of all assigned texts, active and constructive participation in discussions, preparation of answers to questions provided in advance, and completion of assigned topics.
Once these conditions are fulfilled, the student may take the oral exam, which is the final requirement for passing the course.
In cases of exemplary fulfillment of all the above requirements, the instructor may grant an exemption from the exam.
The exam consists of three questions: one prepared topic chosen by the student from a provided list; identification and commentary on a text excerpt; a randomly selected question based on issues accompanying the literary texts (distributed during the semester together with the readings).
A maximum of two unexcused absences is permitted. Absence does not exempt students from preparing the assigned material.
If a student misses half or more of the classes—regardless of the reason—they may not take the final course assessment.

Para aprobar la asignatura, es necesario cumplir con las siguientes condiciones:
asistir regularmente a clase (se permiten un máximo de dos ausencias injustificadas);
leer con regularidad todos los textos asignados, participar de manera activa y constructiva en las discusiones, preparar las respuestas a las preguntas proporcionadas con antelación y elaborar los temas indicados.
Una vez cumplidas estas condiciones, el estudiante podrá presentarse al examen oral, que constituye el requisito final para aprobar la asignatura.
En casos de cumplimiento ejemplar de todos los requisitos anteriores, la profesora podrá decidir eximir al estudiante del examen.
El examen consta de tres preguntas:
un tema preparado previamente por el estudiante, elegido de una lista;
identificación y comentario de un fragmento de texto;
una pregunta aleatoria basada en los temas que acompañan a los textos literarios (proporcionados durante el semestre junto con las lecturas).
Se permiten dos ausencias injustificadas como máximo. La ausencia no exime de la preparación del material asignado.
Si un estudiante falta a la mitad o más de las clases, independientemente del motivo, no podrá presentarse a la evaluación final de la asignatura.
