Latin American Literature I 3305-LAL-11W
The aim of the course is to provide students with a panorama of the latest Latin American literature (late 20th and early 21st century). We will discuss prose texts of writers from various countries of the region, thanks to which its diversity will be shown.
The texts will be analyzed taking into account various research perspectives to develop students' reading, analytical and critical skills. Historical, political, social and cultural contexts affecting the creation and reception of literary works will also be discussed.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
Upon completion of the course, the student knows and understands:
- basic methods of analysis of a variety of Hispano-American prose texts and knows the basic terminology in the description of literary language and understands its sources and applications (K_W02);
- knows and understands the basic terminology, subject matter and directions of literary studies appropriate to Iberian studies (K_W03);
- in a systematic way the history of Latin American literature (contemporary trends, currents, main authors and their works) (K_W04);
- in a rudimentary way the connections between Latin American literature and historical-cultural processes (K_W05).
Skills:
Students can:
- read and understand texts in Spanish (K_U01);
- present their own views, opinions, discuss, present prepared issues on Latin American literature in Spanish (K_U02);
- recognize different types of Latin American cultural texts and carry out their critical analysis and interpretation, taking into account the socio-cultural context and using appropriate methods (K_U03);
- acquire knowledge independently, use textbooks, critical studies and other source materials (K_U04);
- prepare an oral presentation and substantively argue their opinion during a group discussion on Latin American literature and related phenomena (K_U06);
- use basic terminology in literary studies appropriate to Hispanic studies (K_U07).
Social competences:
The student is prepared to:
- acquire knowledge independently and develop research skills in Latin American literature and literary studies (K_K01);
- plan and organise their work, cooperate in a group (K_K02);
- follow contemporary processes and phenomena occurring in Latin American culture and literature, participate actively through various media (K_K03, K_K04).
Assessment criteria
Credit conditions:
Two unexcused absences are allowed. Absence does not exempt one from preparing the material. If someone does not show up, for whatever reason, for half or more of the classes, he or she cannot take the course for credit.
The final condition for passing the course is to pass the final (oral) exam.
To be eligible to take the exam, the following conditions must be met:
- attendance and constructive participation in class;
- systematic reading of all texts; preparation of answers to related questions and discussion in class;
- completion of assignments on the Google Classroom platform.
