Criticism of Artistic Translation II 3305-KPA-SEM-MGR-2U
The seminar is designed to enable students to undertake an original Master's research project in the field of creative and literary translation, familiarize them with the technical and methodological principles of academic writing, and provide them with the necessary guidance to conduct research on a topic of their choice.
The seminar is based on discussions of assigned readings related to the students’ Master's research projects, preceded by presentations on the designated texts. At a later stage of the seminar, participants will be required to prepare regular presentations on successive sections of their Master's theses. These presentations will be delivered during seminar meetings on dates specified by the instructor and will each be followed by a group discussion. Assessment will take into account both the students delivering presentations and those participating in the discussion. All participants will be expected to demonstrate the ability to formulate critical comments and evaluations of the presentations, as well as to pose relevant and constructive questions to the presenter.
The seminar covers issues related to the process of writing a Master's thesis, including:
- the further development and refinement of research methodology;
- the review and critical analysis of the use of scholarly sources;
- the formulation of conclusions;
- discussion of successive chapters and sections of students’ theses.
After selecting the material to be subjected to translation-oriented analysis, seminar participants are divided into thematic and disciplinary subgroups. In consultation with the instructor, they then select the research methods and analytical tools best suited to the successful completion of their Master's research projects.
An integral component of the seminar is the independent library and online research conducted by each participant, aimed at identifying, selecting, and evaluating bibliographic sources relevant to their Master's research project.
Seminar participants will also be informed about conferences and thematic workshops related to their areas of research interest and encouraged to take an active part in these events.
The best Master's theses, or selected parts thereof, produced within the seminar will be presented by their authors at specialist symposia and academic conferences.

KNOWLEDGE
Upon successful completion of the seminar, the student:
- demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, methodology, and terminology specific to the study of literary translation, and is able to develop this knowledge creatively and apply it in professional contexts; additionally, possesses advanced knowledge of terminology in the field of Translation Studies (S1K_W01 / S2K_W01);
- understands the connections between Iberian Studies and other disciplines within the humanities and social sciences (S1K_W02 / S2K_W02);
- possesses knowledge of scholarly and cultural developments in Poland and Spanish-speaking countries related to literary translation, and has an in-depth understanding of the relationships between new research trends in Translation Studies and other humanistic, posthumanist, and scientific discourses (S1K_W04 / S2K_W04);
- possesses advanced knowledge of the terminology, theories, and methodologies of Translation Studies, with particular emphasis on literary translation criticism (S1K_W05 / S2K_W05);
- is familiar with the contemporary achievements of research centres and academic schools in Spanish-speaking countries in the field of translation criticism (S1K_W06 / S2K_W06).
SKILLS
Upon successful completion of the seminar, the student is able to:
- apply acquired research skills, including the critical analysis of cultural products and social phenomena in Spanish-speaking countries, the synthesis of diverse ideas and perspectives on the art of translation, the selection of methods and design of research tools, and the preparation and presentation of research findings, thereby enabling the original resolution of complex problems in the field of literary translation (S1K_U01 / S2K_U01);
- independently acquire knowledge in the field of literary translation, expand research skills, and undertake autonomous activities aimed at developing professional competences and managing a career as a translation critic, translator, or Translation Studies researcher (S1K_U02 / S2K_U02);
- employ acquired language skills in the comprehension and production of spoken and written texts using specialist terminology in the field of translation (S1K_U03 / S2K_U03);
- communicate effectively through a variety of channels and communication techniques with specialists in Translation Studies in both Polish and Spanish, particularly in the area of literary translation (S1K_U06 / S2K_U06).
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
Upon successful completion of the seminar, the student is prepared to:
- collaborate effectively in discussion groups, assuming different roles related to the translation process (S1K_K01 / S2K_K01);
- address ethical and professional dilemmas associated with the work of a translation critic, translator, or researcher in the field of literary translation (S1K_K02 / S2K_K02);
- critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills in literary translation and recognize the need for continuous professional development and lifelong learning in this area (S1K_K03 / S2K_K03);
- participate actively in the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries through various forms of international cooperation and work effectively in research teams and professional groups (S1K_K04 / S2K_K04).
Assessment criteria
The final grade will be based on the following criteria:
- timely submission by email of successive sections of the Master's thesis;
- oral presentations delivered during seminar sessions;
- regular and satisfactory completion of assigned tasks;
- attendance (a maximum of two unexcused absences is permitted);
- preparation of the assigned readings and active participation in seminar discussions.
By the end of the first semester, participants are expected to have completed at least one chapter of their Master's thesis and to present sections of their analysis conducted as part of their research project (a minimum of 12 pages of typed A4 manuscript). By the end of the second semester, participants are required to submit the final version of their Master's thesis.
The use of artificial intelligence tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot) to generate content for the Master's thesis is strictly prohibited. The Master's thesis must be the result of the student's own independent work. Any violation of this rule may result in the case being referred to the University's disciplinary committee.
