Portuguese in translations 3305-JPT-01
During the course, texts from Portuguese (Brazilian) will be analyzed in order to determine their basic characteristics and the possibilities of translation into Polish, as well as to select translation strategies appropriate for a given text.
Texts of various types will be analyzed: chronicles, short prose and audiovisual works (pop culture) - such as fragments of series, advertisements or computer games. Students will be able to observe what elements co-create a given work (e.g. metrical, graphic, phonic, stylistic elements, etc.) and assess whether the presence or absence of any of these elements constitutes a translation problem, and if so - what type of problem it is and what translation strategies to adopt to solve it.
Students will also attempt a preliminary translation of the texts discussed, and at the end of the semester they will make a written translation of a text of their own choice.

Knowledge: The graduate knows and understands
K_W01- in-depth the specificity of linguistics in the context of the humanities and mass media communication.
K_W02 in-depth trends in the development of linguistic research within English philology and translation theory.
K_W04, in-depth principles of research design, and in particular the use of methods and tools in formulating research problems and testing hypotheses.
K_W05 concepts and principles in the field of intellectual property protection and copyright: translator's career, invisibility of the translator/screenwriter
K_W06 economic, legal and ethical and other conditions of various types of professional activity related to the field of study; analysis of many examples of "case studies", such as international advertising campaigns or translations of film scripts.
Skills: Graduates are able to
K_U01 use advanced terminology and conceptual apparatus from the field of literary and cultural studies and translation studies.
K_U02 use in-depth the methodology of linguistic research within English philology, respecting the standards of scientific ethics and copyright law (polysystem theory; Chesterman's ethical standards)
K_U03 use the acquired knowledge to describe and solve a problem and to carry out scientific and media projects concerning topics within the scope of the discipline
K_U04 analyze and synthesize in-depth the content and phenomena of language, literature and culture in the social, historical and media context.
K_U05 recognize the differences between alternative methodological approaches used in a given discipline; especially in relation to the critical reception of translated or adapted works.
K_U06 independently search for information in various sources and assess their usefulness for research work; especially in terms of form and correct selection of sources.
K_U07 use modern technologies in the process of acquiring knowledge and communicate (e.g. with people conducting lectures, consultations, trainings, etc. and co-participants in classes and projects) using various communication channels and techniques: work on ways of developing a presentation topic, collecting information, the ability to narrow the topic to key issues.
K_U09 present the acquired knowledge in a coherent, precise and linguistically correct manner, using English at level C2 (presentations) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, selecting appropriate forms of expression for the communication situation, and communicating with other, diverse audiences (mediation competences)

Assessment criteria
The grade will be based on the following elements:
- attendance at classes (limit of 2 unexcused absences),
- ongoing preparation for classes and activity during them,
- presentation of a short, individually prepared translation
