History of Portugal 3305-HP-11k
The course covers the comprehensive history of Portugal – from the formation of the state in the Middle Ages to the social, political and cultural transformations of the 21st century. The origins of the kingdom, the development of social structures and institutions, and subsequently the overseas expansion that transformed Portugal into a global empire are discussed. Particular attention is paid to epoch-defining processes: the great geographical discoveries, the establishment of a network of trading posts, intercultural contacts, and the role of Brazil as a key part of the empire, especially in the modern era. The course also covers the political crises of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Pombaline reforms, and the consequences of the Napoleonic Wars, including the relocation of the royal court to Rio de Janeiro. The second part of the course analyses the most significant stages in Portugal’s development after 1822: the constitutional monarchy, the birth of the republic, the Estado Novo dictatorship, the Carnation Revolution and democratisation. Decolonisation processes, the country’s modernisation and Portugal’s integration into the European Union are also discussed. The
course highlights the continuity and dynamism of Portuguese history and its significance in a European and global context. The classes also aim to familiarise participants with terminology and selected approaches within the field of historical research methodology.
