(in Polish) Hiszpania w wieku XVII-XIX: dzieje i kultura 3305-HDK-SEM-MGR
The classes will focus mainly on the most important issues, processes, and figures in Spanish history and culture in the 17th-19th centuries, particularly as perceived through personal documents: letters, diaries, memoirs, travelogues, etc. Particular emphasis will be placed on issues such as: society and culture; the history of Madrid; travel literature (travels of Spaniards and to Spain); encounters and clashes of cultures. A particular example will be accounts of expeditions to Easter Island.
In addition, students will familiarize themselves with selected readings in the field of methodology and philosophy of history. They will also learn the principles of academic writing, which they will put into practice by preparing a master's thesis on a topic of their choice. One element of the course will be individual work with each participant on specific topics for their master's theses. Students will also prepare papers on topics of interest to them, including discussions of their progress in writing their theses. An additional element of the course will be films of a general historical, social, and cultural nature; discussion of the films will allow students to broaden their intellectual horizons.
Please note: I do not supervise theses on contemporary topics.
Participants will receive various tasks, both synchronous (discussions, presenting opinions and conclusions) and asynchronous (materials to watch/read in order to prepare a paper, short written assignments).
