1. Latin America, Ibero-America, Abya Yala. The 500th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage and the 200th anniversary of independence. Philosophies of knowing/approaching the Americas.
2. Causes and phases of the independence wars. Enlightenment ideas; the influence of the French and Haitian Revolutions; the crisis triggered by the Bourbon Reforms and the emergence of Creole consciousness. The question of free trade. The Abdications of Bayonne and the formation of independence juntas.
3. Between the old and the new order. The construction of nation-states and the shaping of political culture (presidencialismo, caciquismo, caudillismo). Liberal and conservative ideas. The nature of secularization and its repercussions, illustrated with the Reform Laws in Mexico.
4. The rise of the United States and its imperialist policy (the Monroe Doctrine, the Texas War, Manifest Destiny, the Mexican–American War, the Spanish–American War, the Platt Amendment).
5. The civilisation–barbarism dichotomy and Indigenous policy. (The Conquest of Patagonia in Argentina, the Occupation of Araucanía in Chile, and the Caste War in Mexico).
6. Oligarchic rule, modernization and the formation of the model of economic dependency in the states of Central America. Dependency theory: centres and peripheries. The creation of ECLAC and ISI.
7. Governing the masses and governing minds. The Mexican Revolution and the phenomenon of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Peronism and the Justicialist Party.
8. The land question and agrarian reform in Guatemala and Peru.
9. Latin America as a stage of the Cold War. The role of the Cuban Revolution. Liberation Theology.
10. Latin America as a stage of the Cold War. State terrorism and military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina.
11. The evolution of the armed conflict in Colombia.
12. The “lost decade”, democratic transitions, and the Washington Consensus.
13. Neoliberal reforms and the Pink Tide (the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela and the creation of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas – ALBA).
14. The development of Indigenismo in Bolivia. Recognition of multiculturalism/plurinationality in Latin American states.

Learning outcomes
The student knows and understands the basic Spanish-language terminology related to the history of Latin America; the subject and research directions within selected areas of the humanities, including history, cultural studies and religious studies, relevant to Iberian studies; the most important events in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as key aspects of Ibero-American culture (K_W03; K_W06).
The student is able to read and comprehend primary sources in Spanish useful for analysing Latin American historical processes of the 19th and 20th centuries; express and discuss their own views and opinions in Spanish, and present selected topics related to the history of Latin America and the Caribbean; identify different types of Spanish-language texts, place them within the broader historical context of Latin America, and analyse them using basic terminology and appropriate methods specific to the discipline of history; independently acquire knowledge and develop skills using relevant sources appropriate to Latin American historical studies (encyclopaedias, primary and secondary sources, statistical data, audiovisual materials); prepare oral presentations in Spanish using historical research methods and appropriate sources; and apply basic theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts relevant to the history of Latin America in the 19th and 20th centuries (K_U01; K_U02; K_U03; K_U04; K_U06; K_U07).
The student is prepared to critically assess their own knowledge and skills, and understands the need for continuous improvement and development; plan and organise their work and collaborate within a team; engage with the culture of the Latin American region through various forms and media, and work both autonomously and collaboratively; follow contemporary processes and phenomena occurring in the broad field of the region’s culture and resonating with the history of Latin America (K_K01; K_K02; K_K03; K_K04).
Assessment criteria
The final grade is based on:
1. Attendance: a maximum of two unexcused absences is permitted; each additional unexcused absence results in a 0.5 grade reduction.
2. Preparation and presentation of assigned materials during class (50% of the final grade).
3. Final oral examination covering the lecture content (50% of the final grade).
To pass the course, the student must obtain a positive grade both for the coursework and for the final examination.
