Research Upon Portuguese Literature - Text and Context II 3305-BLP2-1U
This course is devoted to a survey of Portuguese children's, popular, and young adult literature, expanded to include works from across the Portuguese-speaking cultural landscape. Classes also focus on contemporary issues raised in children's and young adult literature, such as identity, diversity, ecology, and social challenges. Theories and methodological tools derived from literary studies will also be discussed, allowing for the analysis and interpretation of texts addressed to young audiences. The course prepares students for independent research and critical reflection on the place and function of children's and young adult literature in culture.

I. Why and how to read children's books?
A theoretical introduction to the study of children's and young adult literature.
II. Reading images.
Illustrated books, picture books, graphic novels. How to read the visual layer?

Learning outcomes
Student knows and understands the advanced terminology of literary criticism, the subjects and areas of research covering contemporary children's and young adult literature in Portuguese and Portuguese-language literature; knows and understands the different research methodologies specific to literary criticism and literary history, as well as their advanced terminology; understands what professional analysis of literary processes consists of and knows how to carry it out with analytical depth and linguistic sophistication; understands the place of Portuguese literary studies in the humanities and is aware of the need for an interdisciplinary approach; knows and understands the historical, cultural and literary phenomena of the periods under discussion; knows how to situate the texts under study in their political and historical context; understands the cultural links between Portugal and Brazil and Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa and their translation into contemporary cultural life in Portuguese-speaking countries.

Student is able to read and understand texts on themes and issues related to contemporary Portuguese and Portuguese-language children's and young adult literature. He or she is able to defend his or her own point of view and opinion in a theoretically informed manner, discuss and problematize topics related to Portuguese literature in Portuguese, both orally and in writing, as well as argue based on the points of view of other authors and formulate conclusions. He or she also knows how to conduct literary analysis, being able to choose the most appropriate critical/theoretical perspective for a work and/or the subject of his or her research. He or she is able to use advanced terminology specific to literary studies, in written and oral form, when presenting the results of independent research/thesis/presentation. He or she is able to recognize different literary genres, even in the fluid situations of contemporary times, and contextualize texts within the appropriate period. He or she has well-established research skills, able to distinguish relevant sources and studies from information devoid of scholarly value. He or she is able to discuss in Portuguese with specialists in the field of literary studies from the Lusophone area.

Student is well prepared to critically evaluate his/her own knowledge and skills and understands the need for continuous training and development in the spirit of "lifelong learning"; interacts and communicates with Portuguese-speaking communities and actively participates in Portuguese culture through various forms and media; is prepared to follow contemporary processes and phenomena in the field of literature and in the area of the Portuguese language, as well as to assume responsibility for defending the cultural heritage of the linguistic area.

Assessment criteria
Students will be assessed as follows:
a) 50% - Active participation in classes (discussion, analysis, problematization).
b) 50% - Writing a short essay (max. 4000 words, not including bibliography) on a theme/problem from the works in the program.
Regularity and punctuality are required.
Students are allowed two unjustified absences per semester. Required attendance is at least 60%.
The grade will be given based on the following scale:
100%- grade 5!
92%-99% - grade 5
85%-91% - grade 4.5
77%-84% - grade 4
71%-76% - grade 3.5
60%-70% - grade 3
Less than 60% - grade 2

Os estudantes serão avaliados do seguinte modo:
a) 50% - Participação ativa nas aulas (discussão, análise, questionamento).

Ao longo do semestre, o Estudante lê, estuda e apresenta (por escrito - um mini-ensaio de 3 a 5 páginas em pdf, formatação típica TNR , margens 2,5, entrelinha 1,5, apresentado ao longo do curso para um debate comum dos Participantes) uma (1) dissertação de mestrado defendida numa conceituada Universidade de Língua Portuguesa (num país lusófono do acervo on-line ), visando a utilidade da mesma para os fins conteudísticos e objectivos metodológicos desenvolvidos no seu mestrado. A tolerância das incomparências não justificadas: 3. A partir da 4-ta ausênica não justificada o Estudante tem a hipótese (possibilidade) de estudar para o aproveitamento à distância - nos casos justificados. O Objectivo de estudar externamente (via Skype) deve ser noticiado no início de semestre. Exigem-se o conhecimento e a aplicação dos cânones do trabalho científico - em Língua Portuguesa. |
