Spanish Literature Studies: text and context II 3305-BLH2-1U
“Spanish Literature Studies II – Text and Context” provides an overview of the most important trends in Spanish literary prose texts (and their analysis) with a special focus on the last two decades of the 20th century and the 21st century.
Thematic scope of the course:
1. Text in a context, context in a text. Selected categories of literary analysis.
2. Do we need a canon? “El canon español”
3. Memory, postmemory and intrahistory: Rafael Chirbes “La buena letra”
4. Genre literature: why we like crime stories (and not necessarily their parodies): Antonio Muñoz Molina “Beltenebros”, Vicente Luis Mora “Alba Cromm”
5. Literary essay: Marta Sanz “Monstruas y centauras”
6. The short story and its (po)et(h)ics:
a) Autofiction in the stories of Esther Tusquets
b) Contemporary (anti)fairy tales of Esther Tusquets, Quima Monzó and Gemma Solsona Asensio
c)The fantastic and the terrifying in the socio-political context: Antonio Muñoz Molina, Gemma Solsona Asensio and David Roas
7. Narrating the crisis: Lucía Etxebarría "Amor, curiosidad, prozac y dudas", Marta Sanz "Clavícula", Pablo Gutierrez "Cabezas cortadas", Sara Mesa "La familia", Putochinomaricón (Chenta Tsai Tseng) "Arroz tres delicias: sexo, raza, género" (novels to choose from)

Learning outcomes
The student knows and understands: the subject and methodological specificity of Hispanic literary studies, which he/she is able to develop creatively and apply in professional activity; has in-depth knowledge of terminology and methodology in the field of the theory of prose genres; knows and understands the connections between literary studies and other fields of the humanities and social sciences; has in-depth knowledge of the research and achievements of centers dealing with the study of contemporary Spanish literature.
(K_W01, K_W02, K_W04, K_W05, K_W06).
The student is able to: use acquired research skills, including critical analysis of literary texts, especially literary Spanish prose; synthesize research ideas and perspectives, select methods of analysis and interpretation; develop and present the results of this analysis, allowing for creative solutions to complex problems in the field of Hispanic literary studies; independently acquire knowledge of contemporary literary prose and expand their skills in researching it, and undertake autonomous actions aimed at developing skills and managing their own professional career; use acquired skills in understanding and creating oral and written texts using terminology appropriate to literary studies (K_U01, K_U02, K_U03).
The student is ready to cooperate in a group displaying different roles in it (K_K01).
Assessment criteria
The course ends with a written exam.
For those who actively participate in every class, there will be a possibility of passing the exam by preparing a project dedicated to one of the discussed texts.
The acceptable number of unexcused absences is 2 x 1.5 hours during the semester.
