MYTH AND LITERATURE. INTRODUCTION TO MYTHOCRITICISM 3304-3MiL-2U
The course introduces students to theory and methods of analysing relations of the myth and the literary work. Particular subject to be discussed is mythocritics, which aims at exploring "mythical dimention" of a literary text. First several classes will focus on general issues, such as various definitions of the myth, structure of a myth/text, difference between mythanalysis (D. de Rougemont) and mythocriticism (G. Durand), history of mythocriticism and its relation with other currents in criticism (psychocriticism, sociocriticism, structural and thematical criticism). An examination of a selection of works and articles, representative for mythocriticism, centering on literary versions of traditional myths, such as Diana, Orpheus, Pan, Prometheus will be the subject of the following classes. The students will have an opportunity to see how methodological principles are applied in practice.
Course grading: active participation in class, short reports.
