History of French literature - 19th century 3304-3HLF50K/KON
The subject of the course will be the complex relationships of the individual and the collectivity which the French literature of the nineteenth century describes in many important works. The complex history of France of the 19th century, marked by subsequent revolutions, uprisings and wars, was written both by whole social groups and by the great personalities of political, social and cultural life. This is reflected in the literature, in which there are many great individualists ready to fight for the good of the public or, on the contrary, strongly oppose this to the general or finally follow their path watching the life happening indifferently. We will be interested in the motives that guide the behavior of individual heroes. We will look for them both in the political, social and cultural contexts sketched by the writers, as well as in the psychology of the heroes. The background for these works will be events in political, social and cultural life, such as the revolution of 1830 or 1848, the birth of Impressionism, the Franco-Prussian war or workers' movements. We will read the works in full or in parts: Chateaubriand ("Rene"), Flaubert ("L'Education sentimentale"), Musset ("Lorenzaccio"), Maupassant ("Boule de suif"), Zola ("L'Oeuvre", " Germinal "), Huysmans (" A rebours ") and poetry of V. Hugo, Th. Gautiera, Ch. Baudelaire and critical texts of E. Zola and S. Mallarme.
