Against the background of ideological and aesthetic changes taking place in France from the end of the 17th to the beginning of the 19th century, the figure of a rebellious slave, depicted in various forms - thematically and formally - in the novel, proposes a specific solution to the dilemma of freedom, reason and ... happiness. Is there a link between aesthetics, assigned to the three title styles, and the way of presenting rebellious heroes? If they are positive heroes, under what conditions?
Does the ideological commitment of the authors modify our reading? Distance between the horizon of the past and present reception.
