Master’s Seminar II: Poetics of French-Language Literatures of the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, and Quebec 3304-2D2W-SM-031
The Master's seminar will focus on the francophone literatures of the Indian Ocean islands, the Caribbean and Québec, in particular on the aesthetic ways and means of depicting the aforementioned spaces in prose, poetry or theatre, as well as on the literary projects rooted in these areas and their relationship to the European canon.
Examples of thematic scope include:
- colonial and postcolonial histories and contemporary challenges in the literatures of the areas covered by the seminar;
- oral literature and its traces in contemporary literary works;
- Intermingling and hybridity (creolisation) of cultures and aesthetics;
- the revitalisation of indigenous cultures through literature;
- issues of identity (postcolonial, migratory, creolised) and its literary representations.
An additional opportunity is to work on manuscripts of letters from the eighteenth century expedition to India and acting as co-editor.

when preparing a dissertation, the rules set out in Resolution No. 42 of the Teaching Council for the Roman Philology degree programme, dated 15 April 2024, apply.

The student knows and understands
- at an in-depth level the place of research on Francophone literature in the field of humanities (K_W01);
- at an advanced level the terminology, methodology and state of research in the field of scientific disciplines relevant to French and Francophone literary studies (K_W02);
- contemporary achievements of research centers and schools in the study of French and Francophone literature (K_W03);
- at an in-depth level the linguistic situation in the French-speaking areas of the Indian Ocean and Caribbean islands and the factors that shaped it (K_W04)
- at an in-depth level selected facts, processes and phenomena occurring in the areas of contemporary culture of Francophone areas, including in particular the Indian Ocean, Caribbean and Quebec islands (K_W07).
The student is able to:
use various sources, including modern information technologies, while respecting the principles of academic ethics and copyright law (K_U01);
independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills necessary for participating in scientific research and research projects in the field of French and Francophone literary studies (K_U02);
independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills necessary for participating in scientific research and research projects in the field of French and Francophone literary studies (K_U03);
apply acquired language skills in understanding and producing oral and written texts using specialized terminology (K_U05);
make advanced use, in their own research work, of conclusions drawn from the analysis of literary texts and scholarly texts in the field of French and Francophone literary studies (K_U06);
apply, at an advanced level, concepts and research methods specific to French and Francophone literary studies in academic discourse and their own research work (K_U07);
construct substantive arguments in French using both their own views and the views of other authors (K_U08);
use advanced information and communication technologies in the process of acquiring knowledge and communicating within the field of French and Francophone literary studies (K_U09);
prepare independent written works in the field of literary studies under the supervision of an academic advisor, including the appropriate selection of research methods and subject literature that takes into account the results of the latest research in the French and Francophone context (K_U11);
prepare oral presentations, including those with a complex structure, using various sources and theoretical approaches (K_U13).
The student is ready to:
critically assess their own knowledge and skills in the field of French and Francophone literary studies (K_K01);
recognize the importance of humanities and social sciences knowledge in solving problems independently or with the help of experts (K_K02);
recognize the importance of humanistic reflection in shaping social bonds (K_K03);
adopt an attitude of openness toward individual and cultural differences (K_K04);
think and act in an entrepreneurial manner in a multicultural context (K_K06);
comply with the principles of intellectual property protection and copyright law (K_K07);
cooperate in a group, solve problems through discussion, and initiate solutions appropriate to the situation (K_K09).
Assessment criteria
Attendance (only two absences "without consequences"), observation of the activity in classes, oral presentation, projects, tests in the first semesters, in the next ones - submitting individual parts of the master's thesis.

Note: the condition for passing the fourth semester is a completed master's thesis accepted by the supervisor.
