Master's seminar: Poetics of Francophone Literatures of the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and Québec 3304-2D1W-SM-027
The Master's seminar will focus on the francophone literatures of the Indian Ocean islands, the Caribbean and Québec, in particular on the aesthetic ways and means of depicting the aforementioned spaces in prose, poetry or theatre, as well as on the literary projects rooted in these areas and their relationship to the European canon.
Examples of thematic scope include:
- colonial and postcolonial histories and contemporary challenges in the literatures of the areas covered by the seminar;
- oral literature and its traces in contemporary literary works;
- Intermingling and hybridity (creolisation) of cultures and aesthetics;
- the revitalisation of indigenous cultures through literature;
- issues of identity (postcolonial, migratory, creolised) and its literary representations.
An additional opportunity is to work on manuscripts of letters from the eighteenth century expedition to India and acting as co-editor.

The student knows and understands
- at an in-depth level the place of research on Francophone literature in the field of humanities (K_W01);
- at an advanced level the terminology, methodology and state of research in the field of scientific disciplines relevant to French and Francophone literary studies (K_W02);
- contemporary achievements of research centers and schools in the study of French and Francophone literature (K_W03);
- at an in-depth level the linguistic situation in the French-speaking areas of the Indian Ocean and Caribbean islands and the factors that shaped it (K_W04)
- at an in-depth level selected facts, processes and phenomena occurring in the areas of contemporary culture of Francophone areas, including in particular the Indian Ocean, Caribbean and Quebec islands (K_W07)
Assessment criteria
Attendance (only two absences "without consequences"), activity in classes, presentations, projects, tests in the first semesters, in the next ones - submitting individual parts of the master's thesis.
Note: the condition for passing the fourth semester is a completed master's thesis accepted by the supervisor.
