The letter in 17th/18th century French literature 3304-1DZXW-KL-27
The seminar aims to familiarise the audience with works using the letter as a means of literary expression in the 17th/18th century. Discussed will be, for example, the authentic letter that became a literary work (the letters of Mme de Sévigné), the novel and the play using the letter to drive the plot (passages concerning the letter in well-known works such as The Duchesse de Clèves, The School for Wives or The Misanthrope) and, finally, the epistolary novel and its evolution over both centuries (from The Portuguese Letters to Dangerous Liaisons). A list of works will be given at the beginning of the class.
