Quebec: from New France to the challenges of today 3304-1DZXW-KHK-11
The goal of the course will be to familiarize students with the basic historical periods of Quebec from the establishment of the French colonies in America to the present day with emphasis on the cultural and social transformations that have occurred over the centuries up to the beginning of the 21st century.
Quebec can be viewed as a miniature of the transformations that have been taking place in societies of Western civilization from the Renaissance to the present day. Political and economic tensions, as well as changes in the mentality of Quebecers, illustrate the main socio-cultural trends that have marked the Western world over the
centuries. Topics of the course will include such issues as colonialism, the formation of language, modernization of state and society, migration and identity issues, and contemporary challenges, including environmental, political challenges facing Quebec.

Learning outcomes
The student knows to an advanced degree the place and importance of the humanities, especially literary studies (K_W01), the main processes occurring in language and literature in the countries of the French-speaking cultural area (K_W03), the directions and methodology of research on language and literature, especially in the countries of the French-speaking cultural area (K_W04), selected facts, processes and phenomena in the field of culture and history of the countries of the French-speaking cultural area (K_W10), basic concepts and principles of intellectual property protection and copyright (K_W13). Students are able to recognize, analyze and interpret various types of cultural products (language, literature), using adequate terminology and appropriate research methods and tools (K_U03), to plan and prepare oral speeches in French and Polish, referring to basic theoretical approaches appropriate to literary studies (K_U05), to acquire knowledge and develop skills independently, using various sources (K_U09). The student is ready to critically evaluate his/her own knowledge and skills (K_K01), to be open-minded towards personal and cultural differences (K_K02), to care for cultural heritage, especially in relation to French and Francophone culture (K_K04), to observe basic rules of professional ethics and rules of intellectual property protection and copyright (K_K06.
