Discursive ethos - creating one's own image through words in selected types of discourse 3304-1DZ3O-SL-040
The seminar will focus on the shaping of image, or discursive ethos, by the speaker in the communication he or she creates. Various linguistic and non-linguistic actions that have an impact on maintaining or changing (deteriorating or repairing) the speaker's image will be considered. The class will therefore focus on the analysis of linguistic means in terms of their content (semantic criteria), the construction of the utterance (e.g. syntactic criteria), the fit with the speaker's intention and the audience (pragmatic criteria).
Non-linguistic means will also be considered, e.g. gestures, facial expressions (multimodal criteria). Considerations will relate to different types of ethos, e.g. prior ethos, individual vs. collective ethos in relation to specific discourse genres representing oral or written communication, e.g. presidential speech, political debate, press interview, manifestation slogans, etc. (The choice of texts will depend on the research interests of those attending the seminar).
