Selected Aspects of Mental Health
This course is intended for students interested in mental health whose current or future professional work is related to the medical, psychological, or therapeutic services sector in a French-speaking environment, or who engage with specialized literature in this field.
Students will develop language skills from levels B1 to C1 in specialized vocabulary related to psychiatry, clinical psychology, and mental health prevention and promotion in the broadest sense: reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking.
Topics covered (subject to modification based on the group’s needs):
1. Mental health and its importance in general medicine
2. Emotions and stress—vocabulary and descriptive strategies
3. Mood disorders (depression, anxiety disorders, burnout)
4. Addictions (alcohol, drugs, digital)
5. Psychotherapy and forms of psychological support
6. Prevention and promotion of mental health (prevention, well-being)
7. Latest research and social debates (mental health, society, work)

Prerequisites (description)

(in Polish) Przed przystąpieniem do realizacji przedmiotu studenci Romanistyki powinni zaliczyć przedmioty II roku. Najbardziej przydatna będzie wiedza ogólna dotycząca zjawisk kulturowych we Francji.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student:
K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_W01, K_W07, K_W08, K_W09, K_U03, K_U04, K_U06, K_U07, K_U08, K_U10, K_K01, K_K02, K_K04, K_K05, K_K06
• possess a broad range of vocabulary related to mental health, therapy, and prevention,
• be familiar with basic concepts in psychiatry and clinical psychology,
• be familiar with social and cultural issues related to mental health in France,
• is able to understand and analyze academic and popular science texts in the fields of psychology and psychiatry,
• is able to use specialized vocabulary fluently in discussions and presentations,
• is able to prepare an oral or written presentation on a topic related to mental health,
• is able to translate excerpts from articles or documents in this field.

Assessment criteria

• Class participation,
• Oral exam (specialized article + discussion)
• Group project: selected aspects of specialized language related to mental health
• Detailed requirements for course completion will be presented by the instructor during the first class.
• Up to 2 absences are permitted.
