The aim of the seminar is to prepare students for independent reading of early literature texts. Joint analysis of selected works from the French Middle Ages and Renaissance, based on the latest critical studies, is intended to encourage in-depth exploration of cultural and literary phenomena and to develop skills in formulating detailed commentary on the texts analyzed.
The era of oral tradition and anonymous authors – The Song of Roland.
Chivalric sensitivity: singing of love, describing a knight’s fate – the works of troubadours and trouvères.

Learning outcomes
Upon successfully completing the course (literary studies seminar), the student:
has the ability to place literary events in their cultural context,
can effectively reference the chronology of the era,
is able to explain the key concepts of the discussed period,
can identify connections between literary phenomena,
is capable of independently analyzing a literary text,
can independently compose a well-structured and linguistically correct text (essay) in Polish on a given topic related to the discussed issues,
is able to express themselves in an organized manner on topics related to the course content.

Assessment criteria
All students must have an address ending with ...@student.uw.edu.pl due to work involving the shared drive.
Requirements:
Attendance and active participation in classes; up to two unexcused absences per semester are permitted.
Presentation of a short report on an assigned topic.
Written assessment: a semester paper in Polish.
Continuous evaluation of oral contributions or an oral exam on topics discussed in class.
Detailed course completion requirements will be provided by the instructor in the first class session.
