The Relationship between Painting and Literature in 19th Century France 3304-1DPXW-KHK-07
The class will focus on showing some of the most important moments in the history of the relationship between literature and the fine arts in nineteenth-century France. After discussing, by way of a theoretical introduction, the basic theories defining the relationship between literature and the fine arts (Horace, Lessing), we will move on to an analysis of specific examples of this relationship, which will show how trends in art such as Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism or, imported from England, Pre-Raphaelitism played an important role in the development of literature (subject matter, form). We will also recall painters (Delacroix, Courbet, Moreau, among others) and writers (Baudelaire, Huysmans, among others) who played a special role in building a dialogue between word and image, and take a closer look at selected paintings.
