The course will be devoted to the most characteristic phenomena in the painting and the architecture of Belgium, in 19th and 20th centuries. Both had a significant role in the formation of the Belgian national and cultural identity. During the course we will analyze specific artistic styles and cultural phenomena (Realism, Luminism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Art nouveau, “bruxellisation”, Pieter Brueghel and his role in 19th century’s foundation myths) and works of selected artists such as Félicien Rops, Fernand Khnopff, Léon Spilliaert, René Magritte, and Paul Delvaux.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student knows and understands:
- in an advanced degree the place and importance of the humanities, history of art and culture in the system of sciences and their subject and methodological specificity (K_W01)
- in an advanced level, the main processes occurring in language, culture and literature in the countries of the French speaking cultural area (KW_03)
- in an advanced level, directions and methodology of research on language and culture, especially in the countries of the French-speaking cultural area (KW_04)
- in an advanced degree, selected facts, processes and phenomena from the field of culture and history of the countries of the French-speaking cultural area (K_W10)
- basic notions and principles concerning the protection of intellectual property and copyright (K_W13)
After completing the course, the student is able to:
- recognize, analyze and interpret different types of cultural products (painting, architecture), using adequate terminology and appropriate research methods and tools (K_U03)
- plan and prepare oral presentations in French and Polish, referring to basic theoretical approaches relevant to the history of culture and art (K_U05)
- acquire knowledge and develop skills using various sources independently (K_U09)
After completing the course the student is ready to:
- critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills (K_K01)
- be open to personal and cultural differences (K_K02)
- care for the cultural heritage, especially in relation to French and Francophone culture (K_K04)
- respect basic principles of professional ethics and the protection of intellectual property and copyright (K_K06)
Zasady oceniania:
- aktywna obecność na zajęciach (dopuszczalne 2 nieobecności); Student/ka, który/a opuści zajęcia więcej niż 2 razy będzie proszony/a o zgłoszenie się na dyżur (ew. online) w celu omówienia treści zajęć, w czasie których był/a nieobecny/a;
- przygotowanie referatów/prezentacji; projekty realizowane w parach lub małych grupach
- 2 testy
Assessment rules:
- active class attendance (2 absences allowed); A student who misses class more than 2 times will be asked to come to teacher’s duty hours (or online) in order to discuss the content of the class during which s/he was absent;
- preparation of papers/presentations; collective projects realized in pairs or small groups
- 2 tests
