History and culture course IIp : Music in France since the Revolution 3304-1DP2W-KHK-02
After the Revolution, France entered a phase of modernity, one of the hallmarks of which was the accelerated evolution of artistic forms and the succession of successive avant-garde movements. Paris—as in other fields—became the capital and mecca of European culture, a status that lasted until the interwar period. The course will focus on the most important and representative trends, composers, and works of classical music from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
– characterize selected phenomena in the musical culture of 19th-century France and the first half of the 20th century (K_W05),
– use basic concepts and corresponding terms applied to the description of culture (K_K02, K_U01, K_U03),
– use various sources and methods, including modern information technologies, to search for, analyze, evaluate, select, and utilize the information necessary to participate in class (K_U09, K_K01).
Assessment criteria
The course concludes with a graded assessment.
Continuous assessment, presentation grade, and a grade on the end-of-semester exam.
