Practical German 3302-PN2-Z
The course is general in nature and aims to teach and practise oral and written communication skills across various thematic areas of personal and professional life, including social, political, economic and cultural topics.
The grammatical material covers, amongst other things:
- Modalverben - objektiv und subjektiv
- Modalverben und ihre Alternativen, und modifizierende Verben
- irreale Folgesätze
- es als obligatorisches und nicht-obligatorisches Satzelement
- Redewiedergabe mit nach, laut, zufolge und wie
- indirekte Rede
- zweiteilige konzessive und restriktive Konnektoren
- Adjektivische und substantivische Deklination
- Präpositionen, Rektion des Verbs (II), Substantivs (II) und Adjektivs (II)
- Vorgangspassiv und Zustandspassiv
- Passivparaphrasen I
- zusammengesetzte Verben (einschließlich Verben mit 2 Vorsilben)
- Satzkonstruktionen mit [an]statt dass, folglichsomit, immerhin, insoferninsoweit ..., als, ob ... oder (konzessiv), ohne dass (temporal, negativ-konsekutiv,negativ-kausal), so Adj.Adv. (konzessiv), sobald, sofern, solange, soviel, soweit, sowie, um so ..., als, wannwasusw. [...] immer (konzessiv), wenn ... auch (konditional-konzessiv), zumal [da]
Corrective phonetics is also an integral part of the course.
The course is taught in German.

Learning outcomes
The student:
- is able to use German at a minimum B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- can understand longer and more complex statements on familiar topics,
- understands most television news and current affairs programmes,
- can read and comprehend articles, including controversial ones, on contemporary issues,
- can independently plan and achieve their own lifelong learning goals (K_U07)
- also understands content expressed indirectly,
- is able to participate actively in discussions on the topics covered,
- is able to write clear, detailed texts on topics related to the issues discussed in class, maintaining an appropriate text structure, using logical argumentation and acquired vocabulary,
- can summarise the main points of a text or film without major errors and write an essay or composition, conveying information or considering the pros and cons, demonstrating knowledge of basic grammatical rules,
- use information technology in study and work whilst adhering to ethical principles, and apply it in the informed and critical reception of media messages, as well as in the creation of publications (K_U06)
The student knows and understands:
- selected grammatical issues at an advanced level (K_W09)
- concepts and principles relating to intellectual property protection and copyright law (K_W10).
The student is ready to:
- critically evaluate their knowledge and the content they receive, recognise the importance of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems, and seek expert advice when unable to solve a problem independently (K_K03)
- adhere to the basic principles of professional ethics and the principles of intellectual property protection (K_K04)
Assessment criteria
1. To pass the semester, students must meet all the requirements set by the main tutor and the supplementary tutors for the group in question, including in particular
a) attendance at classes
b) achieving a pass mark for written and oral assignments completed during classes throughout the semester
c) passing two out of three assessment tasks (independent written assignments) set by the lecturers during the semester. The main lecturer sets two of these tasks, and the supplementary lecturer sets one.
2. To pass the corrective phonetics module, students must pass all tests conducted during the semester and actively participate in the classes.
3. Students who have not passed the module on the first attempt for reasons other than failure to meet the required attendance, are entitled to sit a resit during the winter semester resit period, subject to the rules set by the lecturers.
4. Lecturers shall inform students of the dates of assessment tasks affecting the final mark at least one week in advance.
5. The pass mark for written assessments other than independent written assignments is set at 65%. Independent written assignments are assessed on the basis of content, composition and linguistic accuracy.
NOTES
1) A sick note does not exempt you from the requirement to know the course material. It merely entitles you to a personalised form of assessment.
2) Students who have been granted permission for an individualised study programme are required to contact the course tutor to determine how all the learning outcomes assigned to the course will be achieved. If it is not possible to achieve the aforementioned learning outcomes, the tutor may refuse to award credit for the course.
