English for Academic Purposes 3301-ZPAEAP
The aim of the course is to prepare students for writing and speaking in academic English. Students will become familiar with distinctive features of academic English at the vocabulary and sentence level as well as with strategies for writing and speaking in the academic register. Model academic papers related to students' fields of study (linguistics, literature or culture) will be analysed with respect to vocabulary, structure and strategies used to develop them.
Strategies and skills practised in the course:
1. Recognizing the distinctive features of academic English at the vocabulary and sentence level.
2. Developing strategies for academic writing.
3. Developing organisational skills:
- Linking sentences and paragraphs with words and phrases associated with particular strategies;
- Identifying characteristic features of introductions and conclusions taken from different academic papers;
- Writing adequate introductions and conclusions.
4. Synthesising information from more than one source into an academic paper using appropriate strategies.
5. Developing strategies for academic speaking using useful phrases and structures.
