An introduction to the theory of conceptual metaphor viewed as a means to understand and experience the world; main focus on three experiential domains: LIFE, EMOTION, and TIME. Analyses of conceptual metaphors and metaphorical expressions from everyday language and literature; non-linguistic manifestations of conceptual metaphors (in paintings, sculpture).
Key terms and issues: the nature of metaphorical mappings (examples of common source domains and target domains); kinds of metaphor; metaphorical entailments; coherence of metaphor; metaphor systems; metaphors and blends; universality of conceptual metaphors; cultural variation of metaphors; metaphor in language acquisition: primary metaphors.
