Language and Culture Teaching in the Era of Globalization 3301-ZJ-JS009
This course examines changes in language and culture teaching in light of ongoing geopolitical and socio-economic transformations in contemporary Europe. The dynamic development of Global English as a lingua franca raises questions about the relevance of teaching cultural elements traditionally associated with Anglophone countries, particularly when international English is expected to remain free from the dominance of any single national culture. While the privileged status of one language in today’s world facilitates international communication, it also poses a threat to linguistic diversity. In this context, Braj Kachru’s call for the decolonization of English gains particular relevance. The course also addresses practical issues emerging at the intersection of language and culture education.
The topics and reading materials may be adapted to better reflect participants’ interests and needs, while maintaining core academic content. Key areas include:
a) the emergence of new functional varieties of English; the concept of functional nativism;
b) language ecology and linguistic justice;
c) the relationship between language and culture – pedagogical implications; P. Moran’s model;
d) intercultural teaching based on M. Byram’s framework;
e) the tyranny of native-speakerism;
f) inclusive language and changes in linguistic registers (issues related to non-discriminatory language in terms of gender, identity, or disability – in the context of language and culture teaching as well as materials development).
