British Literature in the 20th Century /Poetry and Novel. War Literature/ - MA Seminar 2 3301-LBS2WI
This seminar will concentrate on the main literary trends and tendencies in English literature of the 20th century (poetry and prose) and their chief representatives. Authors who started their careers in the last decades of the 19th century but were active in the early decades of the 20th will also be included (e.g. Conrad and Hardy), but the main stress will be on British writers from Modernism to Postmodernism (M.A. papers dealing with the work of Scottish, Welsh and Irish, as well as postcolonial writers will also be encouraged). The students will be asked to acquaint themselves with rules of advanced academic research and writing; they will be given a series of critical texts to read in order to familiarize themselves with different critical schools and approaches to the study of a literary text; they will be expected to prepare and present to the supervisor (by the end of the first year of the seminar) a full outline of their M.A. thesis, as well as a sizeable fragment (or chapter) of the thesis.
