James Joyce’s Ulysses and the Matrix of Modernism 3301-LB2055-2ST
During the classes we discuss James Joyce’s Ulysses. Every week students read at home a part of the text which then is analysed in detail. Thus the text is divided into sections which basically correspond to Joyce’s division into episodes, though sometimes we talk about two episodes during one class. The division is as follows:
- Telemachus and Nestor
- Proteus
- Calypso
- Lotus Eaters
- Hades and Aeolus
- Lestrygonians Scylla & Charybdis
- Wandering Rocks and Sirens
- Cyclops
- Nausicaa
- Oxen of the Sun
- Circe
- Eumaeus and Ithaca
- Penelope
Each student once in the semester prepares a short presentation of one Homeric motif.

Students will be able to:
- K_W01 Identify and characterize on an advanced level the place and status of literary and culture studies within the humanities, especially experimental modernist literature
K_W02 Describe on an advanced level the current trends in literary and cultural studies research within the James Joyce studies
K_W04 Characterize on an advanced level the principles of research design in the James Joyce studies with special focus on the application of methods and tools in formulating research problems connected to "Ulysses"
Abilities
Students will be able to:
K_U01 Apply advanced terminology and notions pertinent to the James Joyce studies
K_U02 Apply advanced research methodology within the James Joyce studies and English studies, respecting ethical norms and copyright law
Social competences: students will be ready to:
K_K02 Apply knowledge and skills obtained during the course of studies to undertake lifelong learning, as well as personal and professional development as far as the interpretation of James Joyce's "Ulysses" is concerned.

- K_U01 apply the advanced terminology, theories and research methods of literary studies and
culture and religion studies to solve complex and original research problems in accordance with
his/her chosen specialization (and educational path), as applied to interpreting James Joyce's "Ulysses"
- K_U04 apply the concepts and principles of intellectual property protection and copyright law
