A Study of an American Prose Writer: Susan Sontag 3301-LA1302
The aim of the course is to present students with one of the most important thinkers of the second half of the 20th century, Susan Sontag. Because Sontag took part in almost every important 20th century debate concerning the questions of aesthetics, ethics, ideology and politics, she played a vital part in the shaping of American culture and intellectual discourse in the second half of the 20th century. For this reason, the study of her work offers a unique survey of the most important debates and turning points in 20th century critical thought. During the course, the students will not only get the chance to meet Sontag, the prose writer, but also they will have the opportunity to learn about significant 20th century debates about e.g. photography, AIDS, camp aesthetics, or 9/11.

A student will acquire basic information about:A Study of an American Prose Writer and will develop her/his analytical skills and her/his knowledge of 20th century culture.
In class discussions students will have acquired skills of expressing their thoughts in a clear, coherent, logical and precise manner, with the use of language which is correct grammatically, lexically and phonetically.
