Introduction to Polish-English Translation 3301-L2TR-PL-EN
This course introduces various translation strategies related to texts from a wide range of sources and genres (tourism, reportage, literary texts, etc.). Students will be given the opportunity to explore the different translational possibilities and strategies available to them and, depending on their approach to the text in question, undertake appropriate decisions. While writing practice through translation will be a core endeavour, also mentioned and discussed will be ideas such as purpose, target audience, a translator’s status. The realities of AI will not be ignored, and students will come to see that editorial approaches are becoming increasingly important when it comes to textual production. Students can look forward to doing group work in class, and the tasks will be interactive using a shared Google Doc.
Further aspects to be explored will be:
- the structural and stylistic differences between source and target languages;
- idiom and metaphor;
- wordplay;
- cultural specific items;
- cross-cultural processes.

Students will have familiarity with:
K_W05- English grammar, syntax, phonology, phonetics, morphology and pragmatics on an advanced level, as required for translation purposes;
K_W06 - established translation theories and intricacies of the translation process

Students will be able to:
K_U01 - employ the terminology and methodological tools relevant for to translation studies
K_U03 - analyze linguistic, literary and cultural phenomena and apply them in translation
K_U05 - collect information from various sources, critically assess a source and usefulness of information; analyze and draw generalizations on the basis of information so obtained
K_U06 - identify and implement cultural conventions in translation
K_U09 - present knowledge and communicate in a cohesive, precise and linguistically correct manner in the English language at level C1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Students will be ready to:
K_K03 - value responsibility for one’s own work and respect the work of others, adhering to the professional and ethical norms in translation
K_K05 - function effectively in social and cultural interactions, through various forms and media, thanks to the ability to express oneself in a cohesive and lucid manner

Average score obtained from the following tasks:
- participation in discussions (verification of outcomes: W, U, K).
- home assignments (5-6) (verification of outcomes: W, U, K).
- written assignments, oral contributions, a group project completed during the semester (verification of outcomes: W, U, K).
