21st Century British Studies: Literature, Art and Film 3301-KB003-INTER
“British Studies in the 21st Century – Art, Literature and Film” is a unique course created and conducted in collaboration with the academics from the University of Worcester, and the University of Warsaw. The course offers an in-depth insight into the key cultural, issues of contemporary Britain.
During the classes the following topics will be discussed:

The course covers three topic areas: Arts, Literature and Film.
Taught by Prof. Nicoleta Cinpoes (University of Worcester), Dr Whitney Standlee (University of Worcester) and Dr hab. Katarzyna Kociołek (University of Warsaw), the course will investigate the following issues: Representations of the UK in art and literature; Literature as propaganda; BrexLit & Imperialist Nostalgia, War on the Frontline and the Homefront; Contemporary British Voices in Poetry; Social Class and Art: Challenging Artistic Conventions (Tracey Emin); The Visual Arts Response to Migration and Postcolonialism; Yinka Shonibare and Lubaina Himid; Redefining Gender in Sartorial Practices: Art and Gender; Poverty in the arts: arte povera (Eric Bainbridge), Banksy’s graffiti, art and gender: Grayson Perry; Contemporary Experiments with the British Landscape Tradition Art and Landscape; Literary canon and art counternarratives (High and low art ; Artistic vehicles for gender identity construction; Hybrid Identity (Ali Smith); Rewriting the canon (Patience Agbabi); Rewriting History, (Maggie O’Farrell; Kate Atkinson); Working Class British Art Network; Westwood’s manifesto; digital art vs. landscape painting tradition. The film sessions will cover the following themes: Querying/Queering British History on Screen; Marketing Britishness: Monarchy, Sport, BBC Entertainment – Heritage Film and Biopic.

Learning outcomes
In class discussions students acquire skills of articulating their ideas in a clear, coherent, logical and precise manner, with the use of language which is correct grammatically, lexically and phonetically.
On completing the course, the students will:
• display good critical understanding of British cultural debates;
• have extensive knowledge of the British contemporary culture;
• know how to recognise and analyse today’s texts of culture in their formal and semiotic context;
In terms of knowledge, the students will:
• identify and characterize on an advanced level the place and status of literary and culture studies within the humanities (K_W01);
• describe on an advanced level the current trends in literary and cultural studies exemplified by the analysis of 21st century British art, literature and film (K_W02);
• characterize on an advanced level the principles of research design in literary and culture studies pertinent for British art, literature and film of the 21st century (K_W04);
• identify the notions and principles pertinent to intellectual property and copyright (K_W05).
In terms of skills, the students:
• apply advanced terminology and notions pertinent to the discipline of literary studies, culture and religion studies in the field of British Studies (K_U01);
• apply advanced research methodology within literary and culture studies and English studies, respecting ethical norms and copyright law (K_U02);
• apply knowledge obtained during the course of studies to account for and solve a problem, thereby completing a research task related to the discipline literary studies and/or culture and religion studies (K_U03);
• analyse literary and cultural phenomena and draw generalizations on their basis in the context of societal, historical and economic factors relevant for 21st century Britain on an advanced level (K_U04);
• discern alternative methodological paradigms within a literary studies, art studies and film studies (K_U05);
• find information in various sources and critically assess its usefulness for research (K_U06).
In terms of social competences, the students will:
• apply knowledge and skills obtained during the course of studies to undertake lifelong learning, as well as personal and professional development (K_K03);
• take responsibility for performing one’s professional duties, with due respect for the work of others, obey and develop the ethical norms in professional and academic settings related to the disciplines included on the curriculum of English studies (K_K03);
• assess critically one’s own knowledge and skills related to the studies (K_K04);
• value cultural heritage and cultural diversity as well as individual opinions (K_K06).
Assessment criteria
A research essay or report and in-class participation.
Essay/report marking criteria:
● formatting: clear structure, professional presentation
● analysis: critical engagement with the issue discussed
● knowledge: good knowledge of British politics/arts/media and use of appropriate sources for evidence
● written expression and referencing, clear and cohesive writing and appropriate academic standard of referencing
