Translation Studies: Language and Culture- MA Seminar 1 3301-JSS1SZY02
The seminar’s goal is to prepare each student for writing a diploma thesis in accordance with all formal and methodological requirements as well as with intellectual property rights. The basic assumption is that students choose the subject of the seminar according to their own interests and negotiate the thesis topic with the scientific supervisor.
In class, seminar students get acquainted with methods of working on research sources (both primary and secondary) and select particular issues for their analysis. They also learn rules for writing and structuring academic works, and get familiarized with applicable databases, and other resources.
The MA seminar surveys the major concepts, topics, tendencies, research areas and theories in Translation Studies, preparing the students to undertake their own research to result in an MA thesis. In semester 1 and 2 we discuss selected topics and approaches of contemporary Translation Studies to inspire students to explore the field and provide them with research tools and descriptive frameworks to be applied in preparing MA theses. The selection of topics to be discussed, their allocation to particular semesters and the time devoted to each of them can be modified depending on students' interest.

Students have in-depth knowledge of:

Abilities
students will be able to:
K_U01 apply the advanced terminology, theories and methods of translation studies research to solve complex and original research problems within the area of translation studies in accordance with his/her chosen specialization (and educational path)
K_U02 apply advanced principles of translation studies research design, and in particular they are able to:
- select appropriate sources, methods and tools to analyze a translated text
- critically analyze and synthesize the current state of research in the area of translation studies
- interpret and present the results obtained fro translation data
using advanced information and communication techniques
K_U03 use structures, lexis and language conventions appropriate to the communicative situation (e.g. holding a public debate, giving an academic presentation, etc.) in spoken and written English at the minimum level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
K_U04 apply the concepts and principles of intellectual property protection and copyright law
K_U05 apply the knowledge of economic, legal, ethical and other conditions of various professional activities related to translation
K_U07 use modern technology in the process of finding information relevant to their MA project in translation studies and communicate through a variety of communication channels and techniques
K_U09 design their own development path in relation to the MA project in translation studies and guide others in so doing

K_K01 critically appraise their knowledge and content concerning translation studies obtained from various sources
K_K02 recognize the importance of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems arising in the preparation of an MA thesis in translation studies; consult experts when required
Assessment criteria
Students present an initial outline of the MA thesis, which includes a list of issues to be covered and a preliminary bibliography.
