Contrastive Phonology II 3301-JF2720-2ST
The aim of the course is to discuss selected issues in contrastive phonology and phonetics. The material is mainly taken from Polish and English, but also from Spanish and Ukrainian. The topics cover the theory of interference and the theory of phonetic error. During the meetings, the phenomenon of language interference is discussed, focusing on the sources of the ‘foreign accent’. The course covers topics such as differences in vowel and consonant contrasts, differences in phonetic implementation, differences in sets and scope of phonological processes, characteristics of error-prone processes, as well as differences in the phonotactics of both languages. The course discusses both segmental and suprasegmental phenomena (accent, rhythm), as well as phenomena occurring in careful pronunciation and fast speech (phonostylistics). Students analyze data from English in order to locate areas where the processes discussed earlier may cause pronunciation errors. The analysis aims to sensitize students to the phenomenon of language interference so that they can eliminate potential pronunciation errors themselves in the future, thus using English more fluently. Specific topics include, among others, a comparison of sound inventories and their phonotactic distribution, assimilation processes in terms of voicing and devoicing, allophonic rules, palatalization, assimilation processes, and processes conditioned by syllable structure.
