Linguistic Analysis of Shakespeare's Works and their Polish Translations 3301-JF2662
The course aims at presenting the characteristic features of William Shakespeare’s language and problems with the translation of his works into Polish. Students will get acquainted with phonological, morphological and syntactic issues necessary for the correct reading and understanding of Shakespeare’s texts. The original texts will be compared with their Polish versions in order to show problems encountered by the translators of Shakespeare and to discuss the solutions they adopt.
In particular, the course will touch upon the following topics:
1. Introduction: Shakespeare’s life and works, metre used in his works and their Polish translations
2. Pronunciation of EModE period
3. Rhymes and rhythm in Shakespeare's texts
4. Puns and ambiguity and the challenges of translation
5. Morphology: inflection of EModE period
6. Morphology: word-formation (neologisms) and their Polish equivalents
7. Syntax and the challenges of translation
8. Words and their meaning: easy and difficult words
9. Words and their meaning: semantic shifts
10. Words and their meaning: foreign and dialectal items
11. Culture specific items and their Polish equivalents
12. Figurative language (similes, metaphors) and the challenges of translation
13. Styles and their Polish equivalents

Students will have in-depth familiarity with:
K_W01 advanced terminology, theory and research methods corresponding to the state of the art in the discipline of linguistics, in accordance with their chosen specialization (and educational path), especially the terminology used in historical linguistics as well as the studies on translation of historical texts
K_W04 concepts and principles concerning the protection of intellectual property and copyright
Abilities
Students will be able to:
K_U01 apply the advanced terminology, theories and methods of linguistic research to solve complex and original research problems in accordance with his/her chosen specialization (and educational path), successfully search for sources of information concerning translation of historical texts into Polish
K_U04 apply the concepts and principles of intellectual property protection and copyright law

Students will be ready to:
K_K01 critically appraise their knowledge and content obtained from various sources, especially that pertaining to Shakespeare's texts and their Polish translations

Students will be able to:
K_U01 Apply advanced terminology and notions pertinent to the discipline (linguistics, literary studies, culture and religion studies), especially the terminology used in historical linguistics as well as the studies on translation of historical texts into Polish
K_U03 Apply knowledge obtained during the course of studies to account for and solve a problem, thereby completing a research task related to the discipline linguistics, especially historical linguistics and translation of historical texts into Polish
K_U04 Analyze linguistic, literary and cultural phenomena and draw generalizations on their basis in the context of societal, historical and economic factors on an advanced level with the focus on Shakespeare's texts
K_U05 Discern alternative methodological paradigms within a discipline, especially those pertaining to the translation of a historical text into Polish
K_U08 Participate in group projects, collaborate with others and be a team leader in conducting collaborative research, presentations and other tasks included in the curriculum
K_U09 Present knowledge in a coherent, precise and linguistically correct manner in English on level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, ensuring an appropriate register and form
