English Language and Culture 3301-JF2660-1ST
The course presents the history of the English language from the perspective of the cultural and social changes as reflected in the literary texts and other non-written sources of historical value. List of topics to be covered: the Norman invasion from the perspective of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and the Bayeux Tapestry, Middle English dialectal variation (e.g. York Mystery Plays, Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales), personal names and place names as landmarks to the past; William Caxton and the introduction of the printing press vis-a-vis the onset of the modern English standard, the language of Shakespeare.
