Contrastive Phonology 3301-JF161
This course discusses the phenomenon of linguistic interference, focusing on sources of 'foreign accents'. In particular, it looks at phonetic errors made by Poles in spoken English, which result from differences in the sound system between the source and the target language (Polish and English, respectively). It tackles the issues of differences in vocalic and consonantal contrasts, differences in phonetic implementation, differences in phonological processes and their scope of application, characterization of processes causing interference, and, also, differences in the phonotactics of the two languages. It discusses both segmental and suprasegmental phenomena (stress, rhythm), as well as slow careful speech versus rapid or casual speech phenomena (phonostylistics). The discussion of phonological processes is couched within the generative framework.
