Monographic Lecture: The American Gothic 3301-2ST-WM-LA004-LK
The course shows the diverse uses of the Gothic in American literature and film in different historical periods. Traditionally,, the Gothic has been associated with a set of conventions, regarding for example the construction of space or the portrayal of characters. The course examines the evolution of Gothic conventions in America from the late eighteenth century onward. It highlights the ideological implications of the genre. The reading list includes works by Ch.B. Brown, E.A. Poe, H. Melville, Ch.P. Gilman, E. Wharton, H. James, T. Capote, W. Faulkner, J.C. Oates.
