Specialized translations – legal and journalistic 3300-PNJApd-MSF-3-ZP
The course is devoted to practical exercises in translation of texts from selected fields. Specialist translations module includes translation of chosen types of legal texts, in particular business contracts, articles of association, contract of employment etc., while the functional translations module includes journalist articles form fields such as economy and business. During the course students translate texts from Polish into English and vice versa. Translation practice is preceded by analysis of other texts devoted to a similar topic and intended use with the view of broadening the students’ vocabulary and creating the habit of selecting selecting terminology and style appropriate for a given trade or field. An important part of classes is devoted to discussion of important sources, linguistic models and studies useful in the process of learning how to translate legal texts.

Learning outcomes
K_W11 The student has the knowledge and the understanding of the functions of English and Polish in the translation process, and applies specialist vocabulary necessary for legal and journalistic text translations.
K_U10 The student can use English, particularly in written communication, at C1 level of CEFR scale.
K_U13 The student can cooperate in a team work to find solutions to research problems.
Assessment criteria
Participation – 30%
Final and midterm tests – 40%
Home assignments – 30%
Group and individual translation practice, group discussion on chosen case studies, problems and strategies, lexical exercises.
Two unjustified absences are allowed.
