Spanish Literature and Culture II 3300-LKH2-SFK-2-Z
The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with key texts of Spanish literature, from the 20th and 21st century, including narrative, poetry, drama and selected film adaptations. The classes present a diverse spectrum of topics, such as philosophy of Miguel de Unamuno and José Ortega y Gasset, Generation ’27 with an emphasis placed on Federico García Lorca’s literary work, the most important tendencies in the 20th century prose during Franco dictatorship (tremendismo, existentialism, experimental novel), as well as the newest literary and cultural phenomena in Spain after the transormation in 1975 (Movida madrileña, prostmodernism, memory of Spanish Civil War, a vision of the 21st century as presented in the Fernando Savater’s philosophy, multiculturalism in modern poetry and instapoetry).
Topics of individual classes:
1. Miguel de Unamuno and José Ortega y Gasset: philosophical concepts in Spanish culture of the first half of the 20th century (Miguel de Unamuno, Del sentimiento trágico de la vida en los hombres y en los pueblos, 1913; José Ortega y Gasset, La rebelión de las masas, 1929).
2. Tradition and avant-garde: the cultural phenomenon of Generation '27.
3. The Culture of Andalusia in the works of Federico García Lorca: Romancero gitano.
4. Bodas de sangre, dir. Carlosa Saury (1981) and La novia, dir. Paula Ortiz (2015), Yerma after Lorca dir. Simon Stone (2017): modern adaptations of Andalusian dramas by Lorca.
5. Camilo José Cela: from tremendismo to Nobel's prize.
6. Existentialism in Spanish prose of the 20th century: Carmen Laforet, Nada.
7. The landscape of Spanish society and the confrontation of two "Spains": Luis Martín-Santos, Tiempo de silencio (1962) and Miguel Delibes, Cinco horas con Mario (1966).
8. Spain after 1975: Movida madrileña.
9. Philosophical concepts of Fernando Savatera, Ética para Amador (1991).
10. Postmodernism in Spanish prose: Javier Marías, Corazón tan blanco (1992).
11. Memory of Spanish Civil War: Javier Cercas, Soldados de Salamina, Javier Cercas (2001), Dulce Chacón, La voz dormida (2002).
12. Postmodern reinterpretations: Andalusian culture in modern cinema Blancanieves (dir. Pablo Berger, 2012).
13. On cultural crossroads and in cyberspace: poetry of Teresa Soto and the phenomenon of modern instapoetry.

Assessment criteria:
Seminar participants will be assessed on the basis of attendance (there are 2 absences allowed), active participation in classes, and a concluding exam. Details concerning assessment will be given during classes.
