French History and Culture 3300-HiKF-MSF-1-L
The subject "French History and Culture" is an introduction to the issues of history of France from the 19th to the 21st centuries, as well as to the issues of history of French culture in this period. The spectrum of the topics makes it necessary to select which subjects receive full class dicsussion.
The course discusses the following topics:
- France at the time of the Restoration: politics and economy
- France in the first half of the 19th century: culture and art
- Challenges of the July Monarchy and its fall
- 2nd Republic and 2nd Empire: foreign and domestic policies
- France of the 2nd Empire: society, culture, and art
- 3rd Republic until World War I
- France of the Belle Epoque period
- World War I and the problems of post-war France
- Années Folles and the Great Depression: society and culture
- World War II
- 4th Republic: foreign and domestic policies
- 5th Republic - its birth and institutions
- Intellectual and artistic life of post-war France

Learning outcomes
K_W04 The student has knowledge and understanding of the specialist terminology, methodology, subject, and research trends which are characteristic of cultural studies, particularly of studies of French culture.
K_W09 The student has the advanced knowledge and understanding of selected events of French history from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and important aspects and features of its culture.
K_U01 The student can apply basic theoretical constructs which are characteristic of the studies on culture and religion.
K_U02 The student can apply basic research skills in accordance with the scientific code of ethics and copyright law; these skills include identifying and analysing the problem, choosing adequate methodology and research tools, analysing and presenting results, all of which pertain to the studies on culture and religion.
K_U13 The student can access and gather information independently, and can develop skills with the help of adequate sources.
K_K05 The student is ready to show respect and care for preserving cultural heritage of France.
Assessment criteria
The course requires regular work of students through activity in class. There will also be two tests/colloquia in semester. Each test weighs 50% of the final mark.
There are max 2 absences allowed in the term, regardless of the reason.
