The course aims to enable listeners to gain comprehensive knowledge about young adult literature in the Central and Eastern European region.
During the classes, the following topics will be discussed:
1. What is young adult literature? Young adult literature vs. children's literature.
2. Types of young adult literature – detective literature, literature for girls, literature for boys, adventure literature, fantasy literature.
3. Issues, motifs, themes, characters in young adult literature, Crossover literature.
4. Youth literature before the breakthrough in the Central and Eastern European region – themes, issues, motifs.
5. Youth literature after the breakthrough in the Central and Eastern European region – themes, issues, motifs.
6. Youth literature in Poland – before the 1989 breakthrough and after the breakthrough – genres, change in themes, contemporary youth problems.
7. Youth literature in West Germany – evolution of motifs, issues, change in themes, contemporary youth problems.
8. Youth literature in East Germany – themes, motifs, evolution of themes in youth literature from the 1950s to the 1980s.
9. Youth literature in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic and Slovakia
10. Youth literature in Ukraine – change of themes, motifs.
11. Youth literature in Belarus - change of themes, motifs.
12. Youth literature in Lithuania - change of themes, motifs.
13. Youth literature in Russia - change of themes, motifs.
14. Eastern and Western youth literature.

Upon completion of the course, the graduate:
knows and understands (knowledge):
at a basic level, the complex nature of language, with particular emphasis on the cultural context of the countries in the region (K1_W09)
is able to (skills):
search for, select, analyze, and utilize necessary information from various sources (K1_U01)
referencing acquired theoretical and practical knowledge, use it in typical professional statements concerning the literature of selected countries in the region, as well as the specificity of the region as a whole in a global context, logically construct them, referring to the positions of other participants in these communication situations (K1_U06)
communicate using various communication channels and techniques, including translation techniques, in Polish with specialists on literary topics concerning countries (K1_U07)
independently prepare written and oral statements in Polish on selected topics from the field of literature and issues of the countries of the region (literature and language as media and testimonies of culture) and present the results of their work to the group (K1_U08)
plan and organize individual and team work, plan and implement the process of independent knowledge acquisition, including specialized knowledge, after graduation (K1_U10)
apply modern communication and information technologies in their work (K1_U11)
is ready for (social competencies):
critical evaluation of acquired knowledge, continuous learning and supplementing acquired knowledge (K1_K01)
effective communication and living in society, including in a culturally different society from one's own, undertaking group work, coping with typical professional situations, verifying one's views through factual discussion, and evaluating acquired knowledge (K1_K02)
Assessment criteria
Admission to pass the course requires mandatory attendance at classes in accordance with the Detailed Rules of Studying at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (resolution no. 114 of the Faculty Council of AL dated 19.12.2017).
Classes will be conducted in the form of discussions on assigned readings or material presented by the instructor in the form of a presentation. Active participation in the discussion means substantive engagement in the discussion during at least 50% of classes.
A written assignment (3-6 pages) is also required.
The final grade is based on:
Active and substantive participation in classes (50%) and written assignment (50%).
Grading system:
99 – 100% - 5 (excellent)
93 - 98% - 5 (very good)
87 - 92% - 4,5 (fairly good)
77 - 86% - 4 (good)
71 - 76% - 3,5 (satisfactory plus)
60 - 70% - 3 (satisfactory)
