The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire comprehensive knowledge across selected disciplines within the humanities, social sciences, and the arts. This includes their theoretical and methodological perspectives, as well as the terminology necessary for exploring and understanding the cultural phenomena of countries in the Central and Eastern European region.
The elective modules—covering issues within cultural and religious studies, the history of philosophy, the history and theory of literature and language, film, theatre, and musical arts, intercultural communication, and the concept of the Central and Eastern European region—constitute a necessary contextual supplement to the theoretical and interdisciplinary content offered in the degree programme. They aim to provide students with fundamental knowledge regarding:
- the history and contemporary reality of the region, with particular emphasis on cultural processes and phenomena in the context of social and political transformations;
- the specific nature of various cultural models, as well as their transformation and interconnections, based on the example of the culture of countries in the region;
- the European and global context of cultural processes, as well as an introduction to issues regarding the formation of national, religious, socio-political, and economic relations in the Central and Eastern European region.
- The course is designed to develop the students’ ability to appropriately utilize the knowledge acquired in discourse regarding the history and contemporary reality of selected countries in the region and its specific nature as a whole. Furthermore, it aims to foster an attitude of openness and readiness to communicate and live effectively within society, including within environments culturally distinct from their own.

05. Ethnic and political bond
06. The first attempts to develop the theoretical model of nation
07. The nation and the modernization of agrarian culture
08. The intelligentsia as a national culture-forming group
09. The nation as an imagined community
10. The nation before nationalism
11. Ethnic foundation of the nation
12. National culture, individual identity, and national identification
13. The nation in politics and media
14. The impact of the collapse of the USSR on the views on the nature of the nation and nationalism
15. Nationalism as an ideology
Student workload:
Participation in classes in the classroom - 30 hours (1 ECTS)
Preparation of final essay - 30 hours (1 ECTS)

Assessment criteria
The condition for admission to pass the subject is compulsory attendance during classes in accordance with the Detailed Study Rules at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (Resolution No. 114 of the LS Faculty Council of 19/12/2017)
A student has the right to be absent 2 times in one semester, consisting of 30 class hours (thirty 2-hour classes). At the beginning of the course the teacher will instruct students on how to make up for the absence and complete what they have missed. The student's time table overlaps do not excuse over limit absences.
Classes will be conducted in the form of a discussion on the subject of reading or material presented by the lecturer in the form of a presentation. Active participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
The final mark is an arithemetic mean of two marks received in following categories:
1. Active and substantive participation in classes (50%).
2. A final essay on subject designated by the teacher (50%).
