Optional subject: Protest music in Central and Eastern Europe 3224-MPwESW
The classes are conducted in lecture form and will be devoted to familiarization with and analysis of audiovisual materials from the broadly understood post-Soviet cultural area. The classes will present the main musical currents of protest culture in the post-Soviet area, the cultural, political, and ideological significance of song lyrics, the figures of performers, and their activities. Topics of discussion during the classes will include the analysis of the content of contemporary protest language in culture (musical), the interaction of cultural, social, economic, and political processes in relation to governmental actions. The lecture aims to broaden knowledge about the post-Soviet region, enable participants to critically perceive important aspects of social, cultural, and political life. Additionally, the classes aim to improve language competence. Through the analysis of song lyrics and audiovisual materials, contemporary tendencies in the development of colloquial Russian language (slang, loanwords from other languages, vulgarisms) will be presented.

“Grazhdanskaya oborona” and the Siberian underground (2 hours).
Rap underground. Youth protest culture of the early 21st century (2 hours).
Rap as a new poetry of protest (2 hours).
Performative protest and nonconformism of the new generation (2 hours).
Anti-protest and propaganda patriotism. Instrumentalization of popular music by the authorities (2 hours).
Cultural protest and revolution in the context of changes 2014–2022 (2 hours).

Knowledge:
Upon completing the course, the student will know and understand:
- possesses comprehensive knowledge of protest music in Central and Eastern Europe, including the analysis of audiovisual materials from the post-Soviet and broader CEE cultural space; understands the main musical currents within protest culture, the cultural, political, and ideological significance of song lyrics, and the role of performers and their public activities; is able to analyse the contemporary language of protest in musical culture and interpret it in relation to cultural, social, economic, and political processes, as well as the dynamics between society and state power; is familiar with the historical events that have shaped musical forms of dissent in the region and understands contemporary developments in colloquial language (including slang, borrowings, and profanity); recognizes the key challenges faced by contemporary protest music and is capable of critically assessing its importance for the social, cultural, and political life of the region (K_W09).
Skills:
Upon completing the course, the student is able to:
- search for, select, analyse and use necessary information from various sources (K_U01).
- refer to acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and use it in typical professional statements concerning the protest in musical culture of the countries of the region, as well as the specificity of the region as a whole in a global context, constructing them logically and referring to the positions of other participants in these communication situations (K_U06).
- communicate using various communication channels and techniques on the protest in musical culture concerning the countries of the region (K_U07).
- independently prepare a written and oral statement in Polish and a foreign language on selected topics in the field of protest in musical culture and present the results of their work to the group (K_U08)
- use at least two foreign languages at a minimum level of B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K_U09)
- plan and organise individual and team work, plan and implement the process of independent learning, including specialist knowledge, after graduation (K_U10)
- use modern communication and information technologies in their work (K_U11).
Social Competences:
Upon completing the course, the student is prepared to:
- critical assessment of existing knowledge, continuous learning and supplementing acquired knowledge and skills (K_K01)
- effective communication and living in society, including in a culturally diverse society, working in a team, coping with typical professional situations, verifying one's views through factual discussion and evaluating one's knowledge (K_K02).
Assessment criteria
I. The organization of classes:
1) Attendance at all classes, covered by the plan, shall be compulsory.
2) It is not possible to have a resit if the reason of failing the credit was noncompliance with the requirement to participate in them. In such a case a student can be conditionally registered in an successive stage of study and can repeat the failed course.
3) In case of 30 hours in semester, 2 absences without justifying are acceptable. Missed classes must be made up in accordance with the requirements of the lecturer. The requirements are provided by the lecturer during the first class.
II. Assessment Criteria
The final grade is composed of:
Participation in class sessions – 30 hours (1 ECTS)
Preparation for classes – 30 hours (1 ECTS)
In order to obtain a positive grade for the semester, students must prepare one presentation on a selected topic and demonstrate active participation during classes.
Grading system:
99 – 100% - 5 (excellent)
93 - 98% - 5 (very good)
87 - 92% - 4,5 (fairly good)
77 - 86% - 4 (good)
71 - 76% - 3,5 (satisfactory plus)
60 - 70% - 3 (satisfactory)
